Parent Math Workshops - 2016

Supporting Number Sense at Home
One of the most significant way that parents can support their child's progress in math is to help them build a strong foundation of number sense.  The ability to understand relative quantities and think flexibly about numbers can be accomplished by engaging your child in simple games and other activities.  Families will leave with ideas and materials for engaging games at home. Another goal of the workshop is to provide information about the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, examining the goals and shifts that they call for.

Mill Plain Elementary - RSVP
Wednesday, March 16, 6:00-7:30pm (childcare provided for children 4 years and older)

Addition and Subtraction in Primary Grades
This workshop focuses on learning standards of addition and subtraction, including the use of Number Talks to support reasoning and fluency, and strategies children learn to use with small numbers, that can support their later work with larger numbers.  As with all workshops, we spend time discussing shifts called for in the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, including the introduction and use of the standard algorithms.

Fisher's Landing Elementary - RSVP
Monday, March 7, 6:00-7:30pm (childcare provided for children 4 years and older)

Focus on Fractions
In this workshop we will examine instructional strategies for learning fractions that support students develop physical models and mental images for parts of things, which is inherently more complicated than working with whole numbers that can be counted with fingers and other objects.  Working with physical models can really ease the challenges of learning fractions and make them fun!  As with each workshop, we discuss the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and the important shifts they call for.
